9 Ways to Refresh Your Personal Yoga Practice
(These tips are great for non-yoga teachers too! We could all use a refresh from time to time.)
Explore New Styles- Do you love hot and intense vinyasa? Try Yin Yoga! Do you love partner yoga work? Try acro yoga! Switching up the style will refresh you and give you fresh ideas for the classes you teach!
Change the Environment- If you always practice inside, try going outside into nature! Or, maybe you could spruce up your personal space with a new candle, lights, or props.
Mix up your routine- Do you do the same personal flow each time you go to the mat? Personal yoga time is a great time to explore poses you rarely teach or target a specific body part for relaxation and stretch.
Continued learning- Sign up for a workshop or training that could enhance your personal practice and your teaching!
Use Technology- Maybe it's hard for you to get to a physical class because you are teaching so much. So jump on YouTube or Insight Timer and check out what other teachers are doing. We can always learn from other teachers and it is so fun to turn off your mind and just enjoy the flow.
Set new goals/Challenges- Have you been wanting to master a specific pose? Personal practice time is a great space to work on achieving that goal.
Connect with Community- Perhaps you keep tabs on other students from your YTT or other teachers at your studio. Take a class from them! It is always more fun with friends.
Integrate cross training- Maybe you just need to do something that is not yoga for a minute. I love to go on walks, cross country skiing, weight training, or use the elliptical. After a cardio session or weight session, my body craves yoga again and it feels so great!
Reflect and Journal- Don't forget that yoga is not just a physical practice. Take time to reflect on where you are in this moment. Take a moment to breathe and meditate after jotting down your feelings. You will be surprised how your mind will clear!
Try These Experiment to Refresh Your Yoga Practice!
Take this experiment with me: Implement Intentions
If you decide WHEN you are going to do something, you are much more likely to do it. Create a trigger for yourself. Say to yourself, "When X happens, then I will practice yoga."
What will your trigger be?
Experiment 2- Try Some Breathing Room
A study in 1998 taught a yogic technique known as "complete breathing" to people with lung problems due to congestive heart failure. After one month, their average respiratory rate decreased from 13.4 breaths per minute to 7.6. Meanwhile, their exercise capacity increased significantly, as did the oxygen saturation of their blood.
They learned that:
