3 Ways Today You’re Making Online Yoga Harder Than You Need To

If you’re practicing yoga online to ease pain, get more flexible, or build better habits, you might be accidentally making the whole process harder than it has to be. As an online yoga teacher who specializes in helping busy adults over 40 feel better through simple, accessible movement, I see this every day.

How to fix them so you can finally enjoy yoga at home again

The good news? These mistakes are incredibly easy to fix—and once you adjust, your online yoga practice becomes smoother, more enjoyable, and way more effective.

Below are the top three ways you might be overcomplicating your online yoga practice and what you can do instead.

1. You’re Treating Online Yoga Like an Event Instead of a Routine

A lot of people approach online yoga like it’s a “special event” they need to prepare for—clean the room, find the perfect video, change clothes, set up props, light a candle, and make it all Instagram-ready.

If that works for you, great. But for most busy adults?
That level of prep just guarantees you won’t practice at all.

Make It Easier:

  • Keep your mat rolled out or nearby.

  • Bookmark a small handful of trusted classes (including mine!).

  • Choose short sessions—5–15 minutes builds better habits than the occasional hour-long class.

You don’t need perfection—you just need consistency.

2. You’re Forcing Yourself Into Poses Your Body Isn’t Ready For

If you’re stiff, recovering from old injuries, or over 40, traditional yoga shapes might not feel doable. Many students think they’re “bad at yoga,” when in reality they just need better modifications and clearer guidance.

When yoga feels hard, painful, or intimidating, your brain naturally resists doing it. That’s not a lack of discipline—it’s biology.

Make It Easier:

  • Use props every time. My favorites to have on hand are two blocks, yoga strap, yoga bolster, and blanket (Amazon Affiliate Links).

  • Modify without shame—blocks and chairs are your best friends.

  • Follow teachers who teach with real bodies in mind, not just flexible ones.

Your yoga should meet you where you are—not where you think you “should be.”

3. You’re Relying on Random Videos Instead of Following a Path

One of the biggest frustrations people have with online yoga is knowing what to do next.

You sit down to practice and suddenly you’re clicking through dozens of videos trying to guess which one is “right.” By the time you choose, your motivation is gone.

Make It Easier:

Find a structured yoga path designed for your body, your goals, and your pain points. Whether it’s building flexibility, easing back pain, or creating a daily routine—having a plan keeps you consistent and removes all the guesswork.

This is exactly why I created my online yoga studio.
My classes are short, clear, pain-relief focused, and perfect for busy adults who want results without overwhelm.
